It all began in the late 19th century when our great grandfather Spiridon Markou decided to create our family vineyards in Mesoghaia Attica, region almost always known for producing fine wine, and produced the traditional retsina. In the 1920's he created in the traditional center of Athens called ‘Psiri’ the first tavern in the area called "Spataneiki Taverna". The passion and love for winemaking and vine harvesting was transferred to his son, our grandfather Vassilios Markou, who in 1950 radically redesigned and upgraded the family tavern, which became well known for its excellent wine. This reputation caused many restaurant owners in Athens to purchase this wine, so our grandfather Vassilios Markou expanded the family vineyards, increased the wine production and began marketing the product. Of course, this wine heritage was conveyed to his children, our fathers Spyridon and Constantine Markou, who established in 1983 a modern winery in Paiania, state of the Union of Attica Vineyards, extended our vineyards at the wine-growing area of Nemea and established the "Markou Vineyards" in the Greek and international market. Having the need to share their love, history and all the winemaking wealth that was purchased from the family all these years, they created in 2005 in Pallini the "Wine Museum" a multi-purpose activities, art and wine culture facility. Today along with our fathers, we the 'children', Mary, Vassilis C., Vassilis S., Nicholas and Dimitris Markou, being the fourth generation in wine production, we continue the work of our ancestors.
